History

In October 1960, the US Navy requested proposals on behalf of the Army… for a Light Observation Helicopter. Bell submitted the D-250 design (YOH-4A). On May 19, 1961, Bell and Hiller won the design competition. With this in mind… Bell developed the D-250 design into the Bell 206 aircraft. The first prototype flew on December 8, 1962. A redesign brought about a sleeker and more appealing fuselage, adding cargo space. Hence the designated Bell 206A, became the JetRanger. The first Bell 206A flew on January 10, 1966. In October 1966, the JetRanger received FAA certification. The Jetranger shape remained unchanged since 1967. Bell introduced the JetRanger 206 BII in 1971. The original 206 has evolved into the JetRanger II and the JetRanger III. In September 1973, Bell also developed a seven-place LongRanger. initial versions were 206L and 206L-1.

Design

The 206 sits low on tubular skids, hence making it easy to load passengers and cargo. The 206L LongRanger is a stretched variant with seating for seven. Double doors on port side of cabin provide an opening 1.55m wide. The fuselage stretched even more to a total of 30 inches. Hence the addition of two rear-facing seats. Moreover the port passenger seat folds back. Hence making possible to carry not only survey equipment, but also skis and other long components. The original 206L used an Allison 250-C20B engine. A series of model upgrades replaced this engine with more powerful versions. The 206L-1 uses a 250-C28 turboshaft engine. Hydraulic system: 28V DC electrical power from 180A starter/generator and 17Ah battery. It includes end-plate fins on Tail-plane. Moreover it has a single-pilot IFR with autopilot. Dual controls optional.

Bell Longranger 206 L-1 – 1978

The 206L LongRanger is a multipurpose utility helicopter and seats seven. The Bell 206 series – comprising the JetRanger and its more powerful brother, the LongRanger… created the modern light helicopter market. They have become familiar sights around the world. Bell 206’s not only ferry VIPs, but also mount fire-watching patrols over remote forests.
