History
The Robinson R22 is a single engine and light… utility helicopter manufactured by Robinson Helicopter Company. The two-seat R22 was designed in 1973 by Frank Robinson and has been in production since 1979. Flight testing and certification was performed in the late 1970’s. The R22 received FAA certification in March 1979. It became popular due to relatively low acquisition and operating costs. Not only suitable as a rotor craft trainer but also for livestock management. Based on the R22… Robinson Helicopters went on to produce…a larger and more powerful version, the Robinson R44. Furthermore… the R44 also featured hydraulically assisted flight controls. Following its first flight was in March 1990… the R44 Astro was subsequently awarded a FAA Type Certificate in December 1992. Introduced in 1993… the Astro is the first in Robinson’s R44 line of helicopters and features manual flight controls.

The R44 features hydraulically assisted flight controls as well as adjustable pedals. The Robinson R44 is a single-engine light helicopter. It features a semi-rigid two-bladed main rotor, a two-bladed tail rotor and a skid landing gear. It is a four seater helicopter. The enclosed cabin has two rows of side-by-side seating for a pilot and three passengers. In addition… reversed Tail rotor direction of rotation improves yaw control authority.
