History
The EC120 Colibri originates from the P120. Moreover Aérospatiale intended to replace their Gazelle and SA 315B Lama. With this intention, the first prototype conducted its maiden flight in June 1995. By 1996, a second prototype joined the test program. In February 1997, the EC120 Colibri was formally launched. Conversely… more than 100 orders were received for the type by October 1998. In addition, this increased the production rate from four to six helicopters monthly. As a result… Aérospatiale also established a second assembly line for the EC120 in Australia, in 2002. Development of the rotor craft allowed Eurocopter to extend its range to include 1.5 metric-ton rotor craft.
Design
The EC120B Colibri is a single-engine helicopter. Designed for very cost effective, safe and simple operations. The power plant is a liquid-cooled, dry sump lubricated 4.6 litre… 90° V8 engine. Included is an 1800 bar common rail direct injection. It incorporates several trade mark technologies from Eurocopter. Those of prominence are the 3-bladed main rotor head. Coupled with this is the 8-bladed fenestron… anti-torque tail rotor. For this reason they have been partially credited with contributing to the rotor craft’s noise signature. Moreover this is 6.7 decibels below ICAO limits. In a baseline configuration, flight controls are only installed on the right-hand side. Airbus Helicopters expressly claims that the EC120-B, has the lowest operating cost in its class.
