History
In the 1970’s… test pilot Joseph Tymczyszyn, performed flight testing. Most of the testing took place at Zamperini Field in California. The Robinson R22 received FAA certification in 1979. Due to fairly low acquisition and operating costs… the R22 is popular as a rotorcraft trainer. Furthermore it’s usage includes… livestock management on large ranches. The R22 has a very low inertia rotor system. The control inputs, operated by push rods.. have no hydraulic help. Thus, the flight controls are very sensitive and need a light touch to avoid over correcting. Although the small rotor limits weight… the addition of tip weights increased rotor inertia. The obsolete Mariner version provided floats. The R22 Beta II made the engine speed governor standard. In addition it included a carburettor heat assist.
Design
The R22 is… a light, single reciprocating engine helicopter. It comes with a semi-rigid two-bladed main rotor and a two-bladed tail rotor. The main rotor has a teetering hinge and two coning hinges. The tail rotor has only a teetering hinge. The production variant has skid landing gear. The basic structure is… welded chromoly tubing. The forward fuselage… fibreglass and aluminium with a Plexiglas canopy. The tailcone, vertical and horizontal stabilisers are aluminium. The enclosed cabin comes with side-by-side seating for a pilot and passenger. The doors are also removable for photographic flights. Besides this, it offers interior cooling and weight saving. In addition, an extra feature of the Robinson R22 Beta is an optional engine speed governor. Furthermore… a rotor brake was later added, and an optional auxiliary fuel tank. The battery moved from below the instrument cluster… to the engine compartment for better balance. Presently.. only the basic skid style is sold.

A student generally has no problem transitioning to a heavier helicopter after mastering the R22. Furthermore… pilots in the USA, need endorsement by a certified flight instructor for the R22.
